How Should A Christian VOTE?

As a Pastor and Christian, I am often asked about politics. Surprisingly, I know, since we know that you are never to speak of politics or religion and certainly not together! But, be that as it may, I find it comes up often in each day. As a Pastor, many assume that I belong to one party, those who live in other parts of the country may assume I am in another. Assuming “Southern Democrat” or “right wing Republican” are each a form of prejudice by the way, and at the core discrimination.

So, as a Christian living in the southern United States how should I let my Christian belief influence how I vote? There are those who say that religion and politics do not mix. However, there is really no way to separate what you believe from how you vote. In the same way the person who is non-religious certainly allows that belief to impact the way they vote. Therefore, the Christian, Muslim, Hindu, or Atheist really cannot avoid the influence of belief on their vote, nor do I believe should they try to avoid it. To avoid a belief makes it no belief at all.

Therefore, I wish to speak to Christians here. Certainly, my belief and therefore my vote will not sit well with the Atheist or many other groups. However, that is the amazing thing about this Country, we each get to allow whatever we want to influence us. There may even be a few Christians who do not agree with me.

When we consider the process we use to elect our Government Officials lets consider how it works. Since we have three branches of Government the President is or should be a spokesman for the People of these United States to the people of the world. However, because of partisan politics, especially in our recent history, the President has become more of a spokesman for one Political Party or another. So, we must realize that we are not just electing a person to be President, we are electing a whole political platform or agenda of the Party for which that person is affiliated with. And it is these platforms that each Christian should pay close attention to. The party platform is the agenda, goals, compass which will guide not just the Person who is President, but also those party members in the House of Representatives, and the Senate. We see this all the time when one party wins the Presidency and the other has the House or Senate, nothing gets done because of conflicting agendas or platforms.

So, if you are a Christian reading this here is some advice as to what you must consider when you vote. All this is with the assumption that you believe that God is God, Jesus is His Son, and that we being guided by the Holy Spirit, should strive to keep, adhere, to the Commandments of God and the principles of scripture.

How should a Christian VOTE?

   1. A Christian should vote for the platform that is Pro-God (2 Timothy 3:16).

If a party platform actively opposes God, the Christian cannot align with that Party. We are to have no other God (Exodus 20:3), this includes self and tradition.

   2. A Christian should vote for the platform that is the most Pro-Life Platform, because God hates the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:17, Exodus 20:13).

If a party platform seeks to use tax-payer dollars to fund abortion, a Christian cannot align with that Party. This is not only a moral issue for the Christian but an equal representation issue for everyone.

   3. A Christian should vote for the platform that is the most Pro-Israel platform, because God blesses those who bless Israel and curses those who don’t and has promised to bless the earth through Israel (Genesis 12:3, Acts 3:25).

Every Christian should understand that Israel has always been God’s chosen, and by His grace we, who are not of the Tribe of Israel have been grafted into the tribe. Therefore, to not support Israel is counterproductive to your own believe. The Christian cannot support a platform that disparages Israel and seeks to make Israel anything less than a sovereign nation.

   4. A Christian should vote for the platform that is Pro-Traditional Marriage because God is for marriage as defined in Scripture (Genesis 2:24, Exodus 20:14).

As a Christian, we believe in traditional marriage and see this as a moral issue and one of the root causes of many problems in the Country. Therefore, the Christian cannot align themselves with a platform that does not support traditional marriage.

   5. A Christian should vote for a platform which most closely promotes Government as the insurer of rights not the granter of rights (Romans 13).

Our founding documents got this right! Thomas Paine wrote, “a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right.” Our Scripture affirms that God is our creator and granter of life, these inalienable rights are not given by Government, but are to be protected by government. A Christian, therefore cannot agree with a platform which allows Government to dictate the rights of the people.

   6. A Christian should vote for the platform that sets a goal to eliminate national debt because the borrower is servant to the lender (Proverbs 22:7).

To maintain freedom one must maintain independence, having debt makes us dependent and therefore controlled by the lenders. Each Christian should seek to be debt free and align with the political party that promotes debt elimination.

   7. A Christian should vote for the platform the promotes work because God says if a man won’t work, let him not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

There is value in work, and value in ownership. Things earned have more meaning and create a healthier self-esteem in the individual. Christians should certainly help the poor and the needy, the widows and orphans, assistance needs to and come in many forms, but each form should have the goal of individual independence.

It is therefore, with these principles in mind that you are encouraged to read the published platforms of every party, not just the two major ones (Democrat and Republican) and allow the Holy Spirit to bring to mind what Christ has taught us. Let us (All Christians) unite as one and cast a Vote that would please God.
